Three part series provides information on shade, trees and native garden insects
The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program will host a summer webinar series in 2016.
Master Gardeners will gain educational hours while learning about benefits of shade in landscape, tree problems and native garden insects. Two-hour webinars are scheduled at the ISU Extension and Outreach Greene County office for June 9, July 21, and Aug. 18.
Summer webinar topics include:
- June 9 at 6 pm – Got Shade? ISU Extension and Outreach horticulturist Denny Schrock will teach participants how to utilize shade plants in the landscape while focusing on plants native to Iowa.
- July 21 at 6 pm – Getting to the Bottom of Tree Problems, with Lina Rodriguez-Salamanca, ISU Extension and Outreach plant pathologist and diagnostician with the ISU Plant and Insect Clinic. Participants will become familiar with some of the common symptoms of tree problems and learn what to keep an eye out for.
- August 18 at 6 pm – What’s All the Buzz About? Nathan Brockman is the curator of the butterfly wing of Reiman Gardens at Iowa State University. Attendees will learn about insects native to Iowa and what to do to increase the enjoyment of these six-legged garden visitors.
This webinar series is part of a collaborative project between the Master Gardener program in Iowa and the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-Ed). The collaboration aims to improve the food environment for Iowans with low income, develop a strategic plan for planting food bank donations in gardens across Iowa, and increase the amount of food donated to food banks by Iowa Master Gardeners.
To register, contact Laura Ballard at lballard@iastate.edu or call 515-386-2138. The webinars are free of charge and open to anyone who may be interested.
